“Development of Distance Measures for Process Mining, Discovery and Integration”

Business processes continue to play an important role in today?s service-oriented enterprise computing systems. Mining, discovering, and integrating process-oriented services has attracted growing attention in the recent years. In this article, we present a quantitative approach to modeling and capturing the similarity and dissimilarity between different process designs. We derive the similarity measures by analyzing the process dependency graphs of the participating workflow processes. We first convert each process dependency graph into a normalized process matrix. Then we calculate the metric space distance between the normalized matrices. This distance measure can be used as a quantitative and qualitative tool in process mining, process merging, and process clustering, and ultimately it can reduce or minimize the costs involved in design, analysis, and evolution of workflow systems.

PAPER TWO:

“Ontology Driven Data Mediation in Web Services”

With the rising popularity of Web services, both academia and industry have invested considerably in Web service description standards, discovery, and composition techniques. The standards-based approach utilized by Web services has supported interoperability at the syntax level. However, issues of structural and semantic heterogeneity between messages exchanged by Web services are far more complex and crucial to interoperability. It is for these reasons that we recognize the value that schema/data mappings bring to Web service descriptions. In this article, we examine challenges to interoperability; classify the types of heterogeneities that can occur between interacting services, and present a possible solution for data interoperability using the mapping support provided by WSDL-S, a key driver behind SAWSDL. We present a data mediation architecture using the extensibility features of WSDL and the popular SOAP engine, Axis 2.

PAPER THREE:

“Extensible Architecture for High-Performance, Scalable, Reliable Publish-Subscribe Eventing and Notification”

Existing Web service notification and eventing standards are useful in many applications, but they have serious limitations that make them ill-suited for large-scale deployments, or as a middleware or a component- integration technology in today?s data centers. For example, it is not possible to use IP multicast, or for recipients to forward messages to others, scalable notification trees must be setup manually, and no end-to-end security, reliability, or QoS guarantees can be provided. We propose an architecture that is free of such limitations and that may serve as a basis for extending or complementing the existing standards. The approach emerges from our work on QuickSilver, a new, extremely modular and extensible platform for high-performance, scalable, reliable eventing.

PAPER FOUR:

“Automated Situation-Aware Service Composition in Service-Oriented Computing”

Service-based systems have many applications, such as e-business, health care, and homeland security. In these systems, it is necessary to provide users the capability of composing services into workflows providing higher-level functionality. In dynamic service-oriented computing environments, it is desirable that service composition is automated and situation-aware to generate robust and adaptive workflows. In this paper, an automated situation-aware service composition approach is presented. This approach is based on the a-logic, a-calculus, and a declarative model for situation awareness (SAW). This approach consists of four major components: (1) analyzing SAW requirements using our SAW model, (2) translating our SAW model representation to a-logic specifications and specifying a control flow graph in a-logic as the service composition goal, (3) automated synthesis of a-calculus terms defining situation-aware workflow agents based on a-logic specifications for SAW requirements and the control flow graph, and (4) compilation of a-calculus terms to executable components.

PAPER FIVE:

“Ubiquitous Provision of Context-Aware Web Services”

Providing context-aware Web services refers to an adaptive process of delivering contextually matched Web services to meet service requesters? needs at the moment. This article presents an ontology-based context model that enables formal description and acquisition of contextual information pertaining to both service requesters and services. The context model is supported by context query and phased acquisition techniques. We also report two context-aware Web services built on top of our context model to demonstrate how the model can be used to facilitate Web services discovery and Web content adaptation. Implementation details of the context elicitation system and the evaluation results of context-aware services provision are also reported.
